چکیده

Many image-guidance surgical systems rely on rigid-body, point-based registration of fiducial markers attached to the patient. Marker locations in image space and physical space are used to provide the transformation that maps a point from one space to the other. Target registration error (TRE) is known to depend on the fiducial localization error (FLE), and the fiducial registration error (FRE) of a set of markers, though a poor predictor of TRE, is a useful predictor of FLE. All fiducials are typically weighted equally for registration purposes, but is also a common practice to ignore a marker at position r by zeroing its weight when its individual error, ( ) FRE r , is high in an effort to reduce TRE. The idea is that such markers are likely to have been compromised, i.e., perturbed badly between imaging and surgery. While ignoring a compromised marker may indeed reduce TRE, the expected effect of ignoring an uncompromised marker is to increase TRE. There is unfortunately no established method for deciding whether a given marker is likely to have been compromised. In order to make this decision, it is necessary to know the probability distribution ( ) ( ) FRE p r , which has not been heretofore determined. With such a distribution, it may be possible to identify a compromised marker and to adjust its weight in order to improve the expected TRE. In this paper we derive an approximate formula for ( ) ( ) FRE r p accurate to first order in FLE. We show by means of numerical simulations that the approximation is valid.

Derivation of Expected Registration Error for Point-based Rigid-body Registration

This paper presents two new expressions for estimating registration accuracy in point-based rigid-body registration and points out a danger in using the traditional measure of registration accuracy. Rigid-body registration is appropriate for applications in which relatively rigid parts of the body are involved. In some such applications rigid-body registration is accomplished by aligning two se...

Geometrical analysis of registration errors in point-based rigid-body registration using invariants

Point-based rigid registration is the method of choice for aligning medical datasets in diagnostic and image-guided surgery systems. The most clinically relevant localization error measure is the Target Registration Error (TRE), which is the distance between the image-defined target and the corresponding target defined on another image or on the physical anatomy after registration. The TRE dire...

Fiducial point placement and the accuracy of point-based, rigid body registration.

OBJECTIVE To demonstrate that the shape of the configuration of fiducial points is an important factor governing target registration error (TRE) in point-based, rigid registration. METHODS We consider two clinical situations: cranial neurosurgery and pedicle screw placement. For cranial neurosurgery, we apply theoretical results concerning TRE prediction, which we have previously derived and ...

"Worst-case analysis of target localization errors in fiducial based rigid body registration"

Fiducial-based rigid registration is the preferred method for aligning the preoperative image with the intra-operative physical anatomy in existing image-guided surgery systems. After registration, the targets locations usually cannot be measured directly, so the Target Registration Error (TRE) is often estimated with the Fiducial Registration Error (FRE), or with Fitzpatrick TRE (FTRE) estimat...

Fiducial registration for tracking systems that employ coordinate reference frames [5744-15]

An algorithm is presented that is designed for image-guidance systems that employ coordinate reference frames. It is common in image-guided surgery (IGS) to use a tracking system to determine the position of fiducial markers in physical space. Typically a “Coordinate Reference Frame” (CRF), is also employed, which is rigidly attached to the object being tracked. The positions of markers attache...
